Danny & Carolyn Andrews

Danny Andrews worked for the Plainview Daily Herald for almost 40 years and was its editor for 28 years. He began his career with the Herald as a high-school senior (Class of 1967) after having been sports editor of the school newspaper and annual. He served as the Herald’s sports editor from 1970 until 1978, when he was named editor shortly before the paper was bought by the Hearst Corporation. He wrote a twice-weekly column for almost 28 years, and under his leadership the Herald won numerous press honors. When he left in 2006 to become director of alumni development at Wayland Baptist University, he was Hearst’s longest-tenured newspaper editor.

Danny was born in San Antonio but has lived in Plainview since he was six months old. In 1972 he received a bachelor’s degree from Wayland, where he was editor of the student newspaper. He also served as the university’s sports information director. He was active in the local community, serving as president or chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Noon Optimist Club, Bulldog Booster Club, and Salvation Army Advisory Committee. He was also involved in Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. He is a deacon, adult men’s Sunday school teacher, and choir member of the First Baptist Church and has been program chairman of the Fourth of July Citizens Prayer Breakfast for more than 25 years.

Danny officiated baseball and basketball games and coached in several youth athletic programs. He has been co-publisher of Panhandle-Plains Basketball Magazine, a pre-season preview of high school and college teams, for 35 years, and is the color announcer for Plainview High football games.

Among his many honors are receiving Wayland’s Distinguished Leadership Alumni Award, being inducted into the Panhandle Press Hall of Fame and the Wayland Athletic Hall of Honor, and being named Plainview’s 1995 Man of the Year. He served on the board of the Baptist Standard, a state denominational newspaper, and on the journalism advisory committees of Texas Tech and West Texas A&M.

In 1969, he married Carolyn Fuson in Plainview. She was a longtime employee of the First Baptist Church, where she was director of children’s and preschool ministries for 15 years, before becoming executive assistant to the president of Wayland in 2000. She has served on the boards of the Hale County Crisis Center and Hale County Literacy Council, started the Read First program for local first graders for which she received the Texas PTA Hero for Children Award and the Lity Award from the Literacy Council and is a former member of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce. She also served on several committees for the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The Andrewses have three children and one grandson.
